Many traditional employee surveys focus on engagement. But organizations which also make efforts to enable their employees go on to achieve significantly improved productivity, better customer satisfaction and superior financial returns. Engagement is the result organizations achieve when they stimulate employees’ enthusiasm for their work and direct it toward organizational success. Next Employee Effectiveness You are in the detached segment – enabled but not engaged. You are in the most effective segment – engaged and enabled. You are in the least effective segment – neither engaged nor enabled. You are in the frustrated segment – engaged but not enabled. You feel supported by your work environment, but you find it hard to bring commitment and effort to your work. So what’s it like across your organization? Hay Group’s research shows that in high performing organizations only 9 per cent of employees feel detached. But this rises to 14% in more typical organizations. Organizations with employees in this box miss out on the extra discretionary effort put in by engaged and enabled employees who typically deliver a 50% better performance. If a significant percentage of your employees fit into this segment then your organization has a significant opportunity to improve performance. You feel willing and able to perform at your best and your organization helps you to be productive and efficient. So what’s it like across your organization? Hay Group’s research shows that in high performing organizations 51 per cent of employees are in the most effective segment. This falls to 46 per cent of employees in typical organizations. This suggests that even if you are feeling effective almost 50% of your colleagues are not. What could your organization do to improve on this figure? In this situation you are likely to be performing well below your potential. So what’s it like across your organization? Hay Group’s research shows that in high performing organizations 23 per cent of employees are ineffective and this rises to 28 per cent in typical organizations. If you are feeling ineffective there is a good chance that others in your organization are to. Organization’s in this lower quartile typically generate 2.5 times less revenue growth than those in the top quartile for engagement alone and 4.5 times lower revenue than those organizations in the top quartile for engagement and enablement. What does your organization need to do to help engage and enable you and your employees? This is the most challenging situation to find yourself in – it’s difficult to sustain high engagement when you don’t feel able to get your job done. So what’s it like across your organization? Hay Group’s research shows that in typical organisations 13 per cent of employees are frustrated. Of these employees a disproportionate number are high potential and 50 per cent are looking to leave within 6 months.
